Masone Residences
Continuity in transformation is the deep sense of the work to regenerate the barracks at Via Masone 15 in Bergamo, which have been converted into a residence with garden. The solid volumes are enlivened by materials such as wood, used for supporting structures and coverings, and the local stone used for the pavements and paths of the garden, in a continuous cross-referencing between inside and outside, modernity and history. The building, which is under the protection of the Service for Architectural Assets, was built as a mill, then became a spinning mill and finally a barracks. The story of Masone 15 has been interwoven for five centuries with the productive and institutional history of Bergamo. The conservation of the volumetric conformation, the bearing walls made of solid bricks and the design of the frontages, the regeneration of the cast-iron columns, the mantle and wooden framework of the roof, as well as some choices of materials referable to the history of the building (wood floors and staircases), all have as their objective the maintaining of the role that the building fulfils in the definition of the historical face of Via Masone. The new residence hosts 26 apartments distributed over four levels, 4 on the ground floor with private green spaces. Two floors of underground parking have been built under the land level of the building and the garden. A small independent pavilion positioned in the garden forms the entrance to a recreational zone developed over two levels, to be used as a play area for children, fitness zone and technical spaces.
