Room of the 2725 Shingles, Shiroya Hotel

For the Shiroiya Hotel in Maebashi, designed by Sou Fujimoto, the CIRCLE designed a room covered with 2725 wooden shingles assembled according to a procedure inspired by the Itabuki technique, which is used for the roofs of traditional houses in Japan. In this way, the rigid surfaces of the walls seem to be soft and light like fabrics. Michele De Lucchi says: “We wanted to fill the gap between sculpture and interior design to arrive at a room that was also an artistic installation. To do so, we used 2725 wooden shingles. The rooms of the hotels are usually identified with a number, and in this case, our room has a special number: we have called it the “Room of the 2725 Shingles”.
